I've been spending a lot of time thinking about AI lately, and I'm trying to land in the right spot.
In 2022, I wrote a 4 part AI Code of Ethics for Artists. I had hoped to mobilize a massive collective of artists and industry professionals to strongly say “NO!” to AI use. I imagined some kind of institutional “No AI” certification.
I emailed hundreds of people, but I only got like 30 signatures.
Years later, people are losing their jobs, I see in classes people are all in on AI, and data centers are everywhere. I lost.
So, I use AI. Sometimes.
Here's where I DON'T use AI.
In the shows
In the published music for streaming
On my youtube video editing
In my writing (music, social media, comments, emails, text messages, website copy, bios, show descriptions…)
Here's where I DO use AI.
To fetch stuff (“Hey Claude, go get a good picture from my EPK”)
To organize and code this website (even though I wrote the copy and described exactly what I wanted and picked the colors)
Research for tours (What coffee shop is best — where's a music school near this area?)
Strategy (What's instagram saying about posting frequency these days?)
The idea is, that if you see it and experience it from me, it's me.
I wish AI wasn't here. I tried to make an argument against it. I'm pretty sure we lost this whole thing.
